Secrets & Virtues of the 150 Psalms. A 18th Century grimoire translation.
“This is the true mysterious and divine cabala for the comprehension of the 150 Psalms of the Royal Prophet, by virtue of which he was delivered from so many great perils, obtained so many blessings from God, and finally reached eternal glory. Whoever shall say them, and put them into practice according to the method that is taught, making use of the virtue of the intelligences, and the virtue of their seals or characters, with all the faith, devotion, reverence and humiliation that is due with so Holy and Divine things, he can be sure that he will undoubtedly obtain many special graces from God, and will be able to live contentedly in this world and in the next”..

The magical practice of the Psalms developed considerably during the Middle Ages. According to the Kabbalah, each of the 150 psalms has a specific magical virtue. The Tehillim (Hebrew Psalms) of the Kabbalistic tradition provide us with an appropriate prayer for all situations of daily life. Thus, to obtain God's grace, it is not sufficient to pronounce the indicated psalm. The practitioner will have to draw upon it the Intelligence of the Name related to it. Each psalm is associated with a particular signature (Intelligence), as well as its sigil.
The Intelligences are astral powers that govern all things in the celestial and natural worlds and can also act as intercessors between humans and the divine. Intelligences are considered to be guiding and inspiring entities. In a certain way, the intelligences can be compared to the angels and archons of Gnosticism.
Psalms are used in prayer, during rituals and ceremonies or magical works. They can be used without any constraint of astrological, planetary or elemental considerations. Psalms can be read and sung, but in Jewish, Protestant Christian and Catholic Christian popular traditions it is more common to recite them, from memory or from a book, or while performing other devotions, such as washing, performing a spiritual cleansing of a home or business, placing candles or nightlights on an altar or perfuming a room/person with incense..
